There are over 14 miles of trails with 5 main access points. Besides the gravel roads, the trails tend to be technical, rooty and can be quite steep. There is so much to see in and the Green River Game Lands are truly a hidden gem that allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of life.  The Green River is located within Game Lands, which are public land managed by NC Wildlife.

Favorite Hikes

Walcott Bottoms (3-3.5 miles round trip) If you are looking for a fairly flat hike with great views of the valley, head to Walcott Bottoms access point.  You can head out on the gravel road and enjoy the views along the way.  When you reach an old cabin you can head left and walk along Cove Creek.  There is a good spot to get to the river and play.  Or if you head right, you get on a single track trail that will take you higher up on Cove Creek.

Cove Creek Waterfall Trek(4-5 miles round trip). One of the best kept secrets of the Green River is the Cove Creek Waterfall Trek. This is a hike where you will walk up and trail and come back the river but walking on the rocks and jumping into pools.  Be prepared to get wet, scramble on rocks, and be sure to wear shoes with good traction (not stiff hiking boots). This hike is not be done after a big rain – be conscious of water levels. Follow directions to lower Big Bradley hike.  On the way back, have an amazing adventure heading back down stream jumping off rocks, checking waterfalls and scrambling down the riverbed.  Follow the creek until you are at the location where you originally crossed cove creek then take the trail and gravel road just like you came.

Green River Cove Trail: Green River Cove Trail is a great place to hike in the forest and follow the river with several spots to swim. This is one of the more moderate trails in the Green River Game Lands.

Green River Narrows Hike: By far the most famous hike in the Green River and definitely worth the effort. This will take you to the Narrows of the Green River where you can watch kayakers go over the infamous Gorilla rapid when the river is running.  When the water is shut off, there can be some great swimming holes. Either way it is an unforgettable place to be, but it is not a hike for the faint hearted.  The last 1/2 mile is very steep with ropes to help you along the way.  Be sure to wear good traction shoes (not stiff hiking shoes).

Chigger Ridge/Laurel Mountain: This is a great gravel road hike that will take you to the top of Laurel Mountain (one of the highest points in the Game Lands). Make sure to enjoy the views on the way down.

Bear Branch Loop (8 miles): This is a gorgeous hike that really gives you a flavor of the Green River Game Lands. Be prepared to sweat!

Big Bradley Falls(2 miles round trip): Probably one of the most popular hikes in the game lands with being a short hike to a gorgeous overlook of a waterfall.

Little Bradley Falls (2 miles round trip): Another popular hike where you cross the river several times and end up at Little Bradley Falls – a gorgeous place to be.  Combing Big Bradley and Little Bradley Falls is always a good day of hiking as well.
